Revelation 5:11 – Then I looked again, and I heard the voices of thousands and millions of angels around the throne and of the living beings and the elders. 12 And they sang in a mighty chorus:
“Worthy is the Lamb who was slaughtered—
to receive power and riches
and wisdom and strength
and honor and glory and blessing.”
13 And then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea. They sang:
“Blessing and honor and glory and power
belong to the one sitting on the throne
and to the Lamb forever and ever.”
14 And the four living beings said, “Amen!” And the twenty-four elders fell down and worshiped the Lamb. (NLT)
Today we continue to look at Chapter 5 of the Book of Revelation. Without studying the culture in which it was written, this book is very difficult to understand. Not only is this book difficult to understand, many have freely interpreted it without properly understanding the context in which it was written. The purpose and scope of this blog is not to take an in-depth look into the background and meaning of every verse, but rather to seek a few spiritual lessons from our weekly readings.
In this passage we have a glimpse into John’s vision of heavenly worship. Angels are worshipping Jesus – the lamb who was slaughtered. Remember, seven is a significant number in the Book of Revelation, so it should be no surprise that in verse twelve we have seven things that the lamb is found worthy to receive: “Worthy is the Lamb who was slaughtered— to
receive power and riches and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and blessing.” Let’s take a look at these seven things.
Power: In 1 Corinthians 1:24, Paul tells us that “Christ is the power of God”.
Riches: In Ephesians 3:8, Paul writes of the “unsearchable riches of Christ.”
Wisdom: In 1 Corinthians 1:24, Paul states that Christ is not only the power of God, but “the wisdom of God”, as well.
Strength: In Luke 11:22 Jesus tells us that he is strong enough to take from Satan what Satan has stolen.
Honor: Philippians 2:10 tells us that “at the name of Jesus every knee should bow.”
Glory: Hebrews 1:3 says of Jesus, “The Son radiates God’s own glory.”
Blessing: Hebrews 7 goes into some depth as to how Jesus is the source of all our blessings.
It may be that we don’t think of these seven things when we worship Jesus, but we should! Jesus is so worthy that in his vision, John heard all creation worshipping Jesus (verse 13). Today, let us join in with all creation, and let us worship the lamb who is worthy!
